Stretch Mark Removal
Stretch marks can have a plethora of causes and occur at just about any age. They are a tear in the skin’s dermis, when the skin has been stretched further than its natural capability. Some people get them at a young age due to growth spurts, while others can develop them through pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss. Even body builders can be subjected to experiencing stretch marks. However you get them, they usually don’t show up with an invitation. Getting rid of stretch marks can be tricky and it’s hard to find a remedy that actually works. So what’s the best way to get rid of them? Creams are a hit or miss, but lasers might be an option for you. To be sure, you should schedule a consultation with our office located in El Paso, Texas.
Laser Treatment for Stretch Marks
Darker skin tones (complexions with more melanin), require a pigmentation suppression or bleaching cream in preparation for laser treatment. This is due to the beams from the laser sometimes can cause hyperpigmentation on darker skin. The laser works by stimulating collagen production in the skin where the stretch marks are. As collagen builds, the tear shrinks until it is no longer visible. The treatment can take about 30 minutes, depending on the size of the targeted area. Patients typically feel minimal pain or discomfort, but your doctor can discuss options for pain with you if this is a concern.
Recovery and Results
Most patients go about their daily life following a laser treatment. Because stretch marks are typically in areas that are covered, sun sensitivity shouldn’t be a huge concern. For the best results, you may require 3-5 treatments. Your doctor or esthetician will analyze your skin during a consultation to determine the best treatment option for you, as well as the number of sessions you may need. You should begin seeing results following the first session, but individual results may vary.
Common side effects for stretch mark removal are temporary and short-term. Some side effects include redness, itching and swelling at the treatment site. More serious and less common side effects include prolonged redness, bruising, blistering, lightening or darkening skin color and scarring.
